The introduction of M12 thread push-pull self-locking connector
Abstract:
IEC 61076-2-010:2021 specifies circular connectors with a push-pull locking mechanism of a size derived from, and thus being compatible with M12 push-pull screw-locking connectors (free connectors with screw-locking according to IEC 61076-2-101, IEC 61076-2-109, IEC 61076-2-111 or IEC 61076-2-113 are compatible with push‑pull fixed interfaces according to this document) and with mating interfaces according to IEC 61076-2-101, IEC 61076-2-109, IEC 61076-2-111 (except codings E in general and coding F for inner push-pull) or IEC 61076-2-113.
A fixed connector with push-pull locking according to this document is intermateable with a correspondingly coded free connector with M12 screw-locking according to any of the above mentioned standards.
M12 is the dimension of the thread of the screw-locking mechanism of circular connectors with M12 screw-locking.
IEC 61076-2-012 defines another inner push-pull for fixed female connectors which is however not compatible to the inner push-pull defined in this document. Annex C shows the different styles of female free connectors to extend male free connectors.
This document covers both:
a) power connectors with current ratings up to 16 A and voltage ratings up to 630 V, typically used for power supply and power applications in industrial premises, and
b) connectors for data and signal transmission with frequencies up to 500 MHz.
These connectors consist of both, fixed and free connectors, either rewirable or non-rewirable, with M12 push-pull locking as explained above. Male connectors have round contacts from Ø 0,6 mm up to Ø 1,5 mm. In addition, the push-pull mechanisms consist of 2 different push-pull designs:
c) An outer push-pull for male and female fixed connector, where the locking groove is placed onto the outer cylindric surface of the housing. The outer push-pull for female fixed connectors is made for 2 different types of male connectors. It has locking means for both types on its outer surface.

d) An inner push-pull for female fixed connectors and for male free connectors, where the locking means are placed onto the inner cylindric surface of the housing.
For design and dimensions see 5.3.4.
The different codings provided by IEC 61076-2 series detail specifications mentioned within this document prevent the mating of accordingly coded male or female connectors to any other similarly sized interfaces, covered by other standards and the cross-mating between the different codings provided by any other IEC 61076-2 series detail specification mentioned within this document.
Special Notes:
1.M12 refers to the thread size of the M12 circular thread locking connector locking locking structure.
2. IEC 61076-2-012 defines an alternative push-pull structure for securing female receptacle, but it is not compatible with the push-pull structure defined in this document.
New Standard Inauguration: Eight Connector Vendors with M12 Product Line:Binder, Harting, Molex, Phoenix, Weidmuller, Conec, Escha, and MurrelekTronik reached a consensus with the German Group on Standardization (651.1.1 Working Group on Circular Connectors),A standardized, fully functional lock type M12 push-pull connector has been developed.The results of their work are reflected in today's IEC61076-2-010 standard, which will be published as the final draft international standard (FDIS) on 29 January 2021.
The reason for setting up the new standard: there are too many styles in the market, and each manufacturer has its own design characteristics. Some manufacturers' products can only be inserted with the male or female ends of their products, and cannot be inserted with the products of their manufacturers.This creates costs for customers to choose suppliers, limits the supply base, and risks.In fact, the market about the new fast locking system has been discussed for many years, whether the standardization has not been decided.M12 connectors are available in a variety of forms to meet all requirements for data, signal and power transmission.Of M12 push and pull type new standard roll out, will make standardization becomes possible.It is a good thing for customers to buy standardized products.Customers have more trust in products that meet standards, and there are more manufacturers to choose from.It also promotes healthy market competition.
Features and advantages of the new standard:
All the well-known M12 variants comply with IEC61076-2-010 standards, including field connections, molding and equipment connectors.But there are a few major differences:
• The new M12 push-pull profile also has a full M12 thread, making push-pull and thread-locked M12 connectors interchangeable.
• The combination between the M12 inner push-pull connector and the M12 extrapolated push-pull connector is now possible, as both types are standardized in IEC61076-2-010.
• All known M12 encodings of the previous standard (IEC61076-2-101/109/111/113) can also be used in the IEC61076-2-010 standard.
Although the newly standardized M12 push-pull connector is based on the new standard, the interior is still based on the familiar M12 code (IEC61076-2-101/-109/-111/-113).So, designers don't have to worry, because the internal structure is unchanged.This standardization benefits the external push-pull locking mechanism.
Introduction of the new standard:
1.M12 threaded self-locking connector is an innovation from the original M12 threaded locking connector.The previous M12 threaded connector can only be locked by nut, while the M12 threaded self-locking connector can be locked by either twisting nut or push-pull self-locking.It is important to note that the M12 threaded self-locking connectors are not the M12 push-pull self-locking connectors of Lemo, Fischer, Odu, Souriau, etc. These brands of push-pull self-locking connectors do not have a threaded locking structure.They are not compatible with the M12 threaded self-locking connectors of Binder, Harting, Molex, Phoenix, Weidmuller, Conec, Echa, and MurrelekTronik.
2. About the locking structure:
A) Free connector of male, based on the original M12 threaded connector, a housing is added on the plug body, and a hook structure is provided on the push-pull structure of the housing.At the same time, the thread structure on the plug housing is retained. When the plug is inserted into the socket, it can be pushed and pulled or inserted through the original thread.In particular, this configuration is compatible with non-standard fixed connector of female (M12) thread locking configuration.
B) Free connector of female.Lengthen the size on the original nut, leaving the original nut size and internal thread structure unchanged.There is no threaded structure inside the main body, only a shrapnel design is added inside.When the male head is inserted, it can also be tightened by nut or push and pull.It is compatible with non-standard fixed connector of male M12 thread by thread locking construction.
C) Fixed connector of female.The size of the shell body remains unchanged, with internal thread and internal push-pull structure.The inner push-pull structure is a hook with several straight slot compatible plugs cut on the inner body.Compatible with male end of M12 threaded connector.
D) Fixed connector of male, no change will be made according to the standard of M12 threaded connector.
3. M12 threaded push-pull self-locking connectors of other brands:
At present, in addition to the above 8 manufacturers of M12 connector products, Amphenol is the only one on the market temporarily.Amphenol Lientai's products also meet the IEC61076-2-010 standard, but its design is very different from that of its home.While most other companies design buckles on the back end of the housing, Amphenol Litex designs a row of angled buckles on the front of the housing.It is important to note that the amphenol M12 thread push-pull self-locking connectors can only achieve thread self-locking with M12*1.0 threads.
